Advair Diskus is a steroid and bronchodilator combination medication. It is used to prevent asthma attacks. It is also used to prevent worsening symptoms and flare-ups of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) that is associated with chronic bronchitis and/or emphysema. For COPD patients, Advair Diskus is for long-term treatment. For patients with asthma, Advair Diskus is a short-term treatment until the patient’s symptoms are controlled with other medications. Generic Advair Diskus is also available known as fluticasone and salmeterol known as Seroflo. Advair Diskus is used to treat patients who are at least 4 years old. Advair Diskus is NOT a rescue medicine for asthma or bronchospasm attacks.
Before using Advair Diskus, make sure you understand the instructions provided to you by your doctor, pharmacist, and any information that comes with your asthma medication. Advair Diskus is a powder form of fluticasone and salmeterol and comes with a special inhaler device pre-loaded with blister packs. These packs contain measured doses of medicine. Only use the inhaler that was provided along with your medication.
If you’re using the Advair HFA inhaler, shake it for at least 5 seconds before each spray. Rinse your mouth out with water after spraying use of this Asthma medicine.
Your doctor may change your Advair dosage depending on how your body reacts to the medication, or if you undergo surgery, illness, stress, or a recent asthma attack. Never change your asthma inhaler dosage before your doctor’s approval.
If you are also using an oral steroid medication, do not stop using it abruptly. Ask your doctor about tapering the dose.
Advair Diskus should be stored at room temperature away from light and heat. If you miss a dose, skip the missed dose and use your next one at the regular, scheduled time.
Be sure to tell your doctor your entire medical history before starting on Advair Diskus. Also tell your doctor other drugs you take, including other prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, herbs, supplements, vitamins, and recreational drugs. Advair Diskus may interact dangerously with other drugs.
Tell your doctor your complete medical history, especially if you’ve ever had: glaucoma or cataracts; a seizure; a food or drug allergy; an infection; osteoporosis; liver disease; heart disease or hypertension; diabetes; a weak immune system; a thyroid disorder. People with a severe allergy to milk proteins, who are having an extreme asthma attack, or who have severe COPD symptoms, you should not use Advair Diskus.
Symptoms of an overdose include chest pain, a rapid heart rate, shakiness, and shortness of breath. Seek immediate medical attention if you suspect an overdose or allergic reactions.
When using Advair Diskus, avoid people who are sick or who have infections. Contagious conditions like chickenpox or measles can be fatal for people on steroids. Talk to your doctor about protecting yourself.
Unless you’re told to by your doctor, do not use another inhaled bronchodilator while using Advair Diskus.
Advair Diskus should not be given to a child patient without a medical professional’s advice. Tell your doctor if you are or become pregnant, or if you breast-feed.
Using inhaled steroids long-term can lead to glaucoma, cataracts, thinning skin, increased acne or facial hair, changes in body fat, menstruation issues, impotence, and lack of libido. Long-term use of steroid medications may also result in bone loss (osteoporosis). Your risk is increased if you also smoke, do not exercise, have a family history, or do not consume enough vitamin D or calcium.
Find medical attention as soon as possible if you suspect an allergic reaction or overdose.
Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of these serious side effects of Advair Diskus, such as: breathing issues while using the medication; fever, chills, cough with mucus, and shortness of breath; chest pain, irregular pulse, severe headache, pounding in your neck or ears; tremors and nervousness; sores or white patches in your mouth or throat, trouble swallowing; vision problems, eye pain; symptoms of high blood sugar; symptoms of low potassium levels; symptoms of a hormonal disorder.
Fluticasone can affect growth in child patients. If your child is not growing at a normal rate, talk to your doctor.
Other common Advair side effects can occur, such as: headache, muscle/bone/back pain; nausea and vomiting; irritated throat; cold symptoms; ongoing couch, hoarseness, or deepening of the voice. Please note that this is not a complete list of possible effects. Other effects may occur.
Advair Diskus may interact harmfully with other drugs. Tell your doctor what drugs you take, especially if you also use antifungal medications or medications used to treat HIV/AIDS.
Can I use Advair Diskus for an asthma attack?
No, Advair Diskus is not designed to be a rescue medicine.
Do I need a prescription to buy Advair Diskus?
Yes, a prescription is required to purchase Advair Diskus or generic Advair Seroflo.
I can’t taste or feel the powder when I used Advair Diskus.
Advair Diskus dispenses medication in an extremely fine powder, so it’s possible you may not taste or feel the medication.
Can I use a spacer with this medication?
No. In fact, using a spacer with this asthma medicine may give you an inappropriate dosage of medication. Diskus inhalers are not intended to be used with a spacer.
Can children use Advair Diskus?
Advair Diskus is intended for use by patients at least 4 years of age. However, get a doctor’s approval before using Advair Diskus on a child. Advair Diskus may negatively affect the child’s growth, so see your doctor if you don’t think the child is growing properly.
What should I avoid while taking Advair Diskus?
Because Advair Diskus is a steroid medication and steroid medications can affect your immune system, be sure to avoid sick people and people with infections while you are on Advair Diskus. Infectious diseases like chickenpox or the measles can be fatal to people who are on steroids. Ask your doctor about preventive methods to stay safe.
What are long-term effects of using Advair Diskus?
Long-term use of steroid medications may lead to osteoporosis, or bone loss. Your risk is elevated if you also smoke, don’t exercise, have a family history of osteoporosis, or if you don’t have enough vitamin D or calcium in your diet. Other conditions may result from long-term use; see Side Effects.
