• Take with full glass of water
• Take with or without food
• Do not crush/chew/break/open capsule
• If you miss a dose, and the late dose is less than 6 hours late, take the missed dose as soon as possible
• If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose
• Missed doses may increase risk of stroke
• Your may need regular blood tests
• Do not store dabigatran in a container other than the one it came in
• Do not open more than one container of dabigatran at a time
• Store at room temperature, away from heat and moisture
• Keep container tightly closed
• Dispose of unused capsules older than 4 months past the opening date
• Blister pack capsules should be disposed after the labeled expiration date

General precautions:

• Dabigatran may make it easier for you to bleed from injuries, even minor ones, so avoid activities that may elevate your risk of injury
• Take extra care when engaging in activities that may cause bleeding, including shaving and brushing your teeth
• Avoid drinking alcohol
• Do not stop taking dabigatran without first consulting your doctor, as stopping the medication can increase your risk of having a stroke
• If you require surgery, dental work, or other medical exams and treatments, tell the healthcare provider and your doctor ahead of time if you have consumed dabigatran within the past 12 hours
• Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to be pregnant or breastfeed

Do not use if you:

• Are allergic to dabigatran
• Have an artificial heart valve
• Have active bleeding

Notify your doctor if you have ever experienced:

• A spinal tap, spinal anesthesia, genetic spinal defect, have a spinal catheter, history of spinal surgery and spinal taps
• Stomach ulcers
• Recent/recurring bleeding in stomach or intestines
• Kidney disease, especially if you take dronedarone or ketoconazole
• If you take other drugs that affect blood clotting, such as: aspirin, clopidogrel, heparin, prasugrel, warfarin
• If you take an NSAID regularly, such as: ibuprofen, naproxen, diclofenac, indomethacin, meloxicam etc.
• Talk to your doctor if you are older than 75

Drug interactions (consult with doctor if you also take):

• Abiciximab, clopidogrel, dipyridamole, eptifibatide, ticlopidine, tirofiban
• Alteplase, reteplase, tenecteplase, urokinase
• Apixaban, argatroban, bivalirudin, desirudin, lepirudin, rivaroxaban
• Dalteparin, enoxaparin, heparin, tinzaparin

• Headache, weakness, feeling like you may faint
• Easy bruising, unusual bleeding (nose/mouth/vagina/rectum), purple or red pinpoint spots under skin
• Blood in urine or stools; black or tarry stools
• Vomit shaped like coffee grounds; coughed-up blood shaped like coffee grounds
• Pink or brown urine
• Pain or swelling joints
• Heavy menstrual bleeding
