Vagifem is a hormonal medicine used to treat menopausal symptoms in women. These symptoms include vaginal dryness, night sweats, mood changes, and hot flashes. When A woman goes through menopause, estrogen production slows down and several side effects may occur. If your menopausal symptoms become bothersome, your doctor may prescribe Vagifem inserts. Vagifem contains estradiol which is a type of estrogen.

Please read the instructions carefully and follow your doctor’s directions

• Take the plastic wrap off the applicator and ensure the tablet is placed correctly in the applicator
• Hold the applicator so that you can comfortably press the plunger down
• Find a position to vaginally insert the medication
• Put the applicator into the vagina until half of the applicator is inside
• Press the plunger down fully
• Remove the applicator from the vagina and throw away

Do not take Vagifem if you have:

• Unusual vaginal bleeding
• A blood clotting disorder
• Had a stroke or heart attack
• Uterine or breast cancer
• An allergy to Vagifem
• Liver issues
• Had blood clots in the past

Taking estrogen alone can increase the risk of uterine or breast cancer. Blood clots, strokes, or heart attacks may also occur. Because of this, estrogen therapies like Vagifem are typically prescribed in tandem with a progestin hormone (another type of estrogen).

The most common side effects of Vagifem:

• Bloating
• Diarrhea
• Breast tenderness
• Weight changes
• Nausea
• Vomiting

Tell your doctor right away if you experience:

• Depression
• Memory loss
• Unusual vaginal bleeding
• Breast lumps
• Increased vaginal itching or discharge
• Severe stomach pain
• Dark urine
• Swelling of the hands, feet, or ankles
• Increased thirst
• Dizziness or fainting

When will Vagifem start working?

Research shows that the most bothersome symptoms of Vagifem begin to dissipate as early as 8 weeks after treatment begins, but may take up to 12 weeks. Your doctor will let you know the exact amount of time you should use Vagifem.

How long does it take for Vagifem to dissolve?

Vagifem is designed as a slow-releasing tablet that releases estrogen into the body over the course of several hours after the tablet is inserted. If you insert Vagifem before you go to bed, the tablet can dissolve overnight.
